Success Story: Learn from Sharon and Shane

As the year comes to a close in a festive mood, fund managers are busy closing their trades for the year and planning for the next. So is SpringBoard. We are going to share with you recent success stories of 2 past Kairos stock pitch champions – Sharon and Shane. Since Sharon and Shane put their analyst skills to practice at the Kairos stock pitch competitions, they have managed to impress employers with their stronger CVs, acing more interviews to finally get their desired offers as investment analysts. Their journeys were not smooth sailing and they had to put in consistent hard work to improve themselves continually. They have embraced SpringBoard’s motto to Continue Learning and Keep On Networking, and we are happy to have seen them grow throughout the SpringBoard Program.

Sharon

Springboard was instrumental in both my career moves – first, breaking into the industry, and second, finding a role that I feel passionate about.

Springboard activities helped prepare me for industry work – culminating in the research competition which tests the whole gamut of research skills, from writing to modeling and finally pitching a stock. This was made possible only through the smaller modeling, management luncheon note taking and networking assignments I found really tough at the beginning, but paid off in the end.

I am grateful to all my mentors at Springboard for their constant encouragement through the 1.5 years I spent completing both Foundation and Advanced courses. Indeed, my first breakthrough came only at the urging of my mentor, who urged me to apply for two industry positions when they opened up before I had completed the Basic course. My second mentor has always given me great advice and feedback on how to tackle interviews as well as finding a balance between working hard and smart, which I am not as good at doing.

Finally, I found the Springboard networking sessions to be invaluable in building up a group of equally passionate industry friends who keep each other motivated to be the best we can be, both personally and professionally.

Shane

I was an intern under SpringBoard’s program in the bottom-up equity research/financial modelling path. My journey started in January 2014 and ended in October the same year when I joined a sell-side house as an analyst in their research team.

I am sincerely grateful to SpringBoard for all that they’ve done for me.  There’s no doubt in my mind that without them, the jump into my new role would not have been possible.

From technical skills in financial modelling and equity research to soft skills in networking and interview advice, the program encompasses an all-round preparation for entry into a front office position in finance.

Here are four things I took away from my time in Springboard.

1.       Continue learning – Springboard will provide you with the foundation into fundamental analysis coupled with robust financial modelling skills, but you need to take the initiative to go beyond what is taught. There’s always something you can improve on.

2.       Keep on networking – The events organized by Springboard are a good place to start, but don’t stop there. Look elsewhere (CFA society, university alumni, etc.) to widen your circle of friends. But it’s not just about numbers; you want to build quality relationships. Always have a planned approach so that you don’t waste the opportunity and build on the relationships formed. You never know who might lend a helping hand one day.

3.       Live assignments (in advanced stage) – This is the closest thing to working in a research house. The directions, feedback as well as exposure from the potential employers/mentors are unmatched. Treasure this.

4.       It’ll be all worth it – Tradeoffs will have to be made. You may have to give up your evenings and/or your weekends to complete the tasks assigned by your mentors/prospective employers. There will be times when you’ll feel like quitting. Don’t. I can’t promise you that you’ll succeed in within a certain timeframe. But if you keep at it diligently, someone would eventually take notice.
